For mites, having changed bedding etc, if your hens are roosting at night (this is when mites attack) I suggest you make sure the perches are mite free, then put a narrow but thick ring of Vaseline at either end to trap them on their way to dinner.

Don't use branches with bark as roosts, too many places for mites to hide.

Hey Tony, I want to know what sharpsand is too!

SquirrelGirl, there's been many threads on DE here, Diamat***s Earth. (can never remember how to spell it!) check them out with the search engine... good stuff and not expensive (unless you get rooked like I did)

LOL sharpsand is a fine building grade sand - commonly used in concrete - very cheap and quite effective.

DE is brilliant stuff for mites and worms, but still needs a chemical attack PARTICULARLY if its redmite - they are like cockroach's - practically unkillable!

When I use poultry dust or Sevin on my birds I use it at least every 3 days for a good 10 days. I pour it on my birds and rub it in all the way down to the skin making sure to get their underside and vent area well.

It's probably best to wear a dust mask or cover your face with a bandanna though. It's not real good to breathe this stuff in. After all it is a poison.
